Within 70 km from Fattoria Palazzeta there are two historic towns among the most beautiful in Tuscany. These are Volterra and San Gimignano. Both are easily accessible by car and ideal for spending a day with your family.
Volterra was one of the twelve most important city-states for Etruscan society. The original village, the heart of the modern city, was built on top of a panoramic hill which dominates most of the Val di Cecina. All around there are cultivated fields, olive groves and woods. At a glance the local countryside is very impressive, you can admire it from the Medici Fortress in the highest part of the town. In the historic center there are instead a spectacular cathedral dating back to the Middle Ages, the baptistery and the bell tower. There are also numerous references to the Etruscan origins of Volterra, especially along the walls and in the network of roads.
Even San Gimignano stands on top of a low hill, surrounded by vineyards and countryside, but can be distinguished from other locations by the presence of numerous medieval towers. In its historical center there are as many as 16, but in the fourteenth century there were many more: about 70. This characteristic has earned San Gimignano the nickname of “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”. Despite the disappearance of the towers, the urban structure of the town has not undergone major changes after 1300. It is a unique example in Europe and for this reason San Gimignano has been declared a World Heritage Site. The atmosphere of the village is definitely magical, worth a thorough visit.
