Castiglioncello is a small town on the Tuscan coast about 10 km from Fattoria Palazzeta. The village dominates the top of a promontory overlooking the sea from which you can admire an exceptional panorama. Just at the base of the promontory there is a wonderful bay with a small beach ideal for enjoying the sun and the sea in peace.
In the 19th century, Castiglioncello was a popular holiday destination for writers, poets, painters and artists. Here the “Macchiaioli” movement was born, which often depicted the promontory and the local landscape in their paintings. Subsequently, the town began to be a holiday destination also for movie stars so much that Castiglioncello was used as a set for several films.
The bay of Castiglioncello is well known and frequented by the Tuscans who appreciate it both for its position and for the possibility of practicing numerous water sports. Along the jagged coastline there are several sandy or pebble beaches perfect for tanning. The sea is limpid and fresh. In the bay light winds blow, allowing enthusiasts to practice surfing and windsurfing and to take long trips on a sailing boat.
Not far from here is the marina of Cala de’ Medici, a marina equipped for the mooring of 600 boats. It is here that stop many of the boats and yachts sailing between Livorno, Castiglioncello and the closest islands of the Tuscan Archipelago: Gorgona, Capraia and Elba. Also from Cala de’ Medici depart mini-cruises along the coast or towards the cetacean sanctuary to admire dolphins, sperm whales and fin whales close up.
